PATRICK MEHLMAN, PhD
ACTING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Patrick has major scientific interests in primatology and conservation. His primate studies have researched free-ranging and wild macaques as well as wild gorillas, while his more recent work in conservation has focused on executive management of landscape-scale initiatives, fundraising, and partnership creation.
He has been a contributing author on more than 40 peer-reviewed articles, first-authoring 10 of these, as well as six book chapters. During his conservation career over the last 25 years, he has developed and managed multi-million-dollar projects for Conservational International, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, and Rare Inc. His passion is empowering local people to take stewardship over their lands to preserve biodiversity and foster local economic development.
At BCI, he continues this work and leads BCI’s REDD+ initiatives to combat climate change and support local economic development. Patrick received a Ph.D. and M.A. in Bioanthropology at the University of Toronto and a B.A. in Anthropology from Indiana University.
